A Cappella

10 10 2010

A clear sign that a business is a strong part of its local community is its notice board, a place where the heartbeat of an area can be gauged and interesting gems always found. The cork notice board at A Cappella, a pizza restaurant and cafe straddling the border of Knowle and Totterdown, is a clear indication of what this place is all about.

A quick glance shows notices for a mother and baby singing group, a pet-sitter, tango classes and a gardening club. On the wall opposite are more flyers and brochures for the Tobacco Factory, Watershed and the like.

A Cappella is now firmly established in this corner of the Wells Road, and like any good business should be these days, it is adaptable and means different things to different people. Cafe by day, pizza restaurant by night, I saw it transform in front of my eyes on a Friday afternoon as the coffee cups were cleared off the tables to be replaced by menus, cutlery and glasses.

They are fortunate that their pavement outside is so wide, and the outside area can be a real sun-trap in good weather. Inside, a counter packed with cakes and pizza ingredients dominates the room, and look beyond it for the open kitchen.

Reclaimed church pews always get my vote when it comes to furniture, while the choice of music when I visited was also a winner – Catching a Tiger by young American singer Lissie (who is playing the Thekla on October 28).

The pizza menu is split into three sections, meat, fish and vegetarian, with the mozzarella sourced from Naples and all pizzas made to order and then stonebaked. As well as pizza, food specialities here are tapas and salad.

Just like every good cafe and restaurant should be, A Cappella is a well-loved part of its community. It’s an extra bonus that their coffee and pizzas are so great.

A Cappella, 184c Wells Road, Knowle. 0117 971 3377.
