Preview: Bristol Comedy Garden

22 04 2011

Some of the biggest names in British comedy are coming to Bristol this summer for the first ever Bristol Comedy Garden, taking place between July 20 and 23 within a specially-erected big top in Queen Square. It’s yet another new or resurrected festival in what is shaping up to be a superb summer of events.

Performers confirmed so far read look a Who’s Who of comedy talent: Russell Howard, Ed Byrne, Ardal O’Hanlon, Stephen K Amos, Shappi Khorsandi, Angelos Epithemiou, Sean Hughes, Stewart Francis, Craig Campbell, Milton Jones, Isy Suttie and Bristol’s very own Mark Olver.

I am particularly looking forward to the appearance of Adam Buxton (right), of Adam & Joe fame, presenting Bug on the afternoon of Saturday, July 23, a look at some of the best music videos being made around the world.

Once the comedy finishes on the Friday and Saturday nights, the big top will be taken over by the brilliant Silent Disco.

The organisers of Bristol Comedy Garden are Will and Cass Briggs, the brother and sister team behind the Greenwich Comedy Festival.

“It’s great to be launching this event with Russell on board,” said event programmer Will. “He’s really excited to be playing this hometown gig, in a relatively intimate venue, having just done a massive stadium tour.

“It’s going to be a very special gig, a great kick-start to the festival and will really set the bar for the days to follow.”

Event manager Cass said: “We can’t wait to get down to Queen Square. We were there the other day in the sunshine and it was glorious. Bristol is a seriously cool city and the response we’ve had to this event so far has been great, which makes us feel better!

“We’re looking forward to having a successful first year and giving Bristol another great annual festival in the future.”

Bristol Comedy Garden tickets are on sale from Monday, April 25. Tickets cost from £15 to £24. For more information and to see the full line-up, visit www.bristolcomedygarden.co.uk.
