Pub of the week: The Cadbury

30 11 2011

The Cadbury in Montpelier is one of those pubs where everybody seems to know everybody. Especially on the Friday night when I visited, during which the bar staff had a dance and sing-song behind the bar, encouraged by the punters, perhaps fuelled by the famous roasts’n’reggae earlier on in the day.

I didn’t partake in a roast on this occasion, but after a long day with not much food I was pleased as punch to discover Snyder’s of Hanover pretzels, with three varieties on offer from what claim to be the favourite pretzels of our American cousins made in Bristol’s twin town.

My pretzel pieces of choice were cheddar cheese and hit just the spot, washed down by a well-kept pint of Courage. Other ales are Doom Bar and Gem, while Thatcher’s Gold and Addlestone’s are on tap and three other ciders are served straight from their boxes to one side of the bar.

So that’s bar staff dancing behind the bar, pretzels behind them, cider to the left, and above that a selection of hats, from a yellow Bob the Builder number to a sailor’s hat from the HMS Montrose.

In the Cadbury, Bose speakers, all the better to play tunes from the regular DJs, contrast with the brick column in the centre of the pub, the original fireplaces and a few other authentic touches such an antique clock and sweet dispenser.

The Cadbury is Montpelier’s alternative, laid-back character, encapsulated in pub form.

The Cadbury, 68 Richmond Road, Montpelier, Bristol. 0117 924 7874.
