Sunday Times Magazine exhibition

20 03 2012

A free exhibition to mark 50 years of the Sunday Times Magazine, twice extended at the Saatchi Gallery in London, comes to the Paintworks this week. It will feature work published in the Magazine by world famous photographers including Terry O’Neill, Lord Snowdon and Sam Taylor-Wood.

The Sunday Times launched the first colour magazine in a newspaper in February 1962. The paper’s then owner Roy Thomson predicted it was “going to be a disaster”.

Mark Boxer, the first editor of the Magazine, later said: “A curious truth soon emerged: readers liked it – so much so that about a quarter of a million new readers were attracted to the newspaper.”

Fifty years of writing in the Magazine is also celebrated in the exhibition. Writers have included Ian Fleming, Martin Amis, Bruce Chatwin, Zoe Heller and James Fox.

The Sunday Times Magazine 50th Birthday Exhibition is at the Paintworks, Bristol, between March 24 to April 3. For more information, visit www.paintworksbristol.co.uk.

I have just discovered this blog and therefore have only just found out about this exhibition. I am sad to have missed it – would have been the perfect antidote to my Easter holidays boredom. Will definitely read this blog regularly in future (also had no idea that Hugh Grant was in Bristol last week!)
