Pub of the week: The Star & Dove

25 04 2012

The new team at the Star & Dove in Totterdown celebrated their first birthday this month with a party. Former chefs and now landlords Leigh Pascoe, Tim Denny and Matt Duggan have put the pub on the culinary map since taking over last year, and it’s now up there with the Pump House, Albion and Robin Hood’s Retreat as one of Bristol’s best.

The unique thing about the food is that inspiration is drawn from recipes dating back hundreds of years. If that’s too much, there is also ‘beer food’, or bar snacks.

When I visited on a Monday evening, there was unfortunately no time for food, but I did enjoy a mighty fine pint of Chocadee, a double chocolate milk stout from Dawkins Ales. It was delightfully creamy, with more than a hint of chocolate, but not quite up there with Bristol Beer Factory’s Milk Stout. Is anything?

The two other beers on tap were Long John Silver from Wickwar and DBC Ammonite, with a dozen more ales and lagers in bottled form chalked up on a board in the room to your right as you walk in.

My beer was served in a good old-fashioned pint glass, a pleasingly traditional touch in a pub whose decoration includes battered leather sofas, and a carriage clock next to a pair of antlers.

On Friday, the Star & Dove team will be highlighting their food on Queen Square as part of Eat Drink Bristol Fashion, and the next day will be back in the pub for their spring market. Over the May Bank Holiday they’re hosting a music festival, and a garden party is being held on June 5 to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee.

There’s always an excuse for a party at the Star & Dove.
