Angel Berry

6 05 2012

I was reading a review of Cher Lloyd’s gig at Bristol Academy in the last ever Venue magazine on my first trip to Angel Berry. And it got me thinking that this new frozen yogurt establishment was rather similar to Chezza, loud and brash on the outside, wholesome on the inside.

Angel Berry is the brainchild of friends Ryan Pasco and James Taylor and opens on Broad Quay in what used to be remarkably uninspiring cafe Coffee Beach. It’s their second outlet in Bristol, following hot (cold?) on the heels of the original in Hartcliffe’s Imperial Retail Park.

Angel Berry’s party piece is along a curved back wall where customers help themselves to the yogurt – probiotic! high in calcium! one-third the calories of ice cream!

My own choices out of the ten on offer were cherry, Madagascan vanilla, and a dash of jaffa cake just for the novelty factor. Flavours will change on a regular basis.

You can certainly taste the real fruit, and more can be added from the toppings selection, a mindboggling array from which I had strawberries, raspberries, raisins, chocolate raisins, mini Oreo biscuits and fudge pieces. There might have even been a few others.

Piled high, you then pay for your tub by weight, £1.50 per 100 grams. My yogurts with their tower of toppings came to a not unreasonable £4.05.

There is also coffee and tea on offer from Clifton Coffee if you need heating up after what, unsurprisingly, is a very cold dish, so cold it turns some of the toppings rock solid like something from a science experiment with liquid nitrogen.

I sat in to eat mine, in a room that encompasses most colours of the rainbow, with a particularly bright pink wall nearest the entrance like one would probably find in Cher Lloyd’s house.

The new cafe is already doing a brisk service with a product that is new to this country but huge in the United States. When that sun starts shining and summer arrives, Angel Berry’s frozen yogurt could also be huge in Bristol.
