The Duchess of Totterdown

19 08 2012

Royalty has arrived on the Wells Road with The Duchess of Totterdown. Serving home-made food at very reasonable prices, the new cafe also tries to source all of its produce from local and ethical traders, serving up their food and drink on china plates, cups and saucers.

Open seven days a week, The Duchess is a very welcoming new addition to this corner of Bristol, complementing A Cappella cafe and pizza restaurant just down the road.

Colourful pieces of art on the walls by Suzie Killick includes a bicycle wheel with feathers as spokes. There is a wooden African princess in one corner with a necklace of bones and a colourful painted dress, while the cafe’s notice board is made out of wine corks.

Coffee is by Brian Wogan, with a selection of cakes and a cream tea for £2.75. A full all-day cooked breakfast costs £4.95, while there is also a full range of sandwiches on Park Bakery bread from Windmill Hill. When I visited for coffee on Friday afternoon, the specials board included a baked chocolate tart (£2) and a veggie platter (£3.50).

Take a bow or a curtsy, The Duchess of Totterdown has arrived.

Brian is Terry’s love child, he’s a bit touchy about so I wouldn’t mention it. Makes good coffee though. Agreed great cafe and soon to open on some evening too, I’m starting a writing group there on the first Tuesday of every month. Hope to see you there.
