Katie & Kim’s Kitchen

19 08 2012

It’s bad timing for Katie & Kim’s Kitchen to be nominated in the British Street Food Awards. Next week they will be leaving their horse box in front of the Motorcycle Showrooms on Stokes Croft for a number of summer events and only return to Bristol in late September.

By then, they might have been named winners of the awards. That’s if they can get to the ceremony, because their 4×4 has broken down.

“We’re trying to find someone to tow us to the British Street Food Awards,” Katie told the Guardian. “Maybe we should start an appeal.”

Street food is experiencing something of a renaissance in the UK at the moment, and in Bristol, friends Katie and Kim are at its forefront.

The pair met at art college and used to host monthly supper clubs in their Horfield home, before buying a horse box for £300 on eBay and fitting it out with a bread oven.

Katie & Kim’s Kitchen is open weekdays between 8am and 5pm Monday to Friday, but from next week they will be away until September 21.

When they return, welcome them with open arms by sampling their amazing bacon sandwiches (£3.50), made with home-cured bacon, home-made brown sauce and fresh bread; or what I sampled on Thursday lunchtime, grilled flatbread with chorizo cured by Castellano’s in Fishponds, with alioli, leaves and sweet onion (£4).

So bad timing for the awards. But exemplary street food.
