My top-five Bristol favourites: Joanna Papageorgiou

2 09 2012

In the first of a new series where those who know Bristol best share their favourite parts of the city, blogger Joanna Papageorgiou (www.ephemeraldigest.com) takes us on a journey from the “verdant oasis” of Brandon Hill to the manuka matcha lattes at Lahloo Pantry.

1. Brandon Hill
This verdant oasis in the city centre is steep enough to offer far-ranging views of southern Bristol and big enough in its informally separated areas to enjoy lying down, having picnics and encounters. There is also a play area for children and a panoramic view for those daring to climb up the 109 steps of Cabot Tower.

2. The Glassboat
A floating restaurant with views of Bristol Bridge from one side and cobbled streets along Welsh Back from the other. On the Floating Harbour, swans swim by and gentle waves lull, in a place you would regret ordering less than three courses from the fine dining menu. Choose a wine that suits sunsets.

3.  Lahloo Pantry
Tea rooms where delicate macarons wait alongside lemon polenta cakes, lavender biscuits and banana bread with maple butter. Free range and filling breakfasts, afternoon teas plus cheese scones with chilli jam. A vast range of teas including genmaicha and a manuka matcha latte, and one coffee. Kind service, welcoming atmosphere.

4. The Arnolfini
A spacious and light-filled art gallery with a bookstore, cafe, reading room and the most creative, mind-expanding selection of exhibitions which I have come across. I’ve seen miniature cities made of sugar, broken toys, Americana photographs and much more. Lovely for wanderings.

5. The Rummer (below)
Off a cobbled lane in central Bristol is a bar where the house whisky is the triple single malt Monkey Shoulder and the main room includes a fireplace. The range of beers, rum and cocktails is immense and candle light provides intimacy even when busy. Perfect for a third date.
