The Bristolian Cafe

11 12 2012

It’s a huge welcome back to The Bristolian on Picton Street on Montpelier, now open in a new guise in new more comfortable surroundings. It may still serve cooked breakfasts, but The Bristolian Cafe is no longer a greasy spoon as once was, but an all-day cafe offering breakfast, lunch and dinner.

The broad selection of coffee and teas is written on white tiles underneath an old Picton Street sign. Coffee includes piccolo, a mini latte similar to a cortado that I have not seen served elsewhere in Bristol. Tea options include white pelong and flowering osmanthus.

For lunch yesterday, I enjoyed a tuna, cottage cheese, dill and capers baguette (£3.50), an unusual combination but one that definitely worked.

On the counter was fresh bread that I was told was made on the premises, alongside for those with a sweet tooth apple pie, mince pie and a flapjack.

Benefiting from an alcohol license, there are bottles of Peroni and bottles of wine behind the counter, still in the same place on the right as you walk in.

This is a very welcoming cafe, with floor tiles all the colours of the rainbow matching the coloured stained glass windows. One booth has painted orange wood, red cushions and an orange Chinese lantern hanging above it.

Another red sofa has a blue tent awning, while the rest of the seats and tables are wooden, with wooden seats overlooking the windows and plenty of power sockets.

The Bristolian Cafe has left it late, but this new venture in familiar premises on Picton Street is without doubt one of the best new openings in Bristol this year.

It’s lovely isn’t it? And such a delight to see it back. The Bristolian had been my breakfast venue of choice for years when visiting Bristol. I’m pleased to say that the breakfasts are as good as ever, while the coffee and cakes are fantastic!
