Whiteladies Road Picture House public enquiry starts today

8 01 2013

A public enquiry into the future of the Whiteladies Picture House begins today at the Mansion House. Expected to last four days, the enquiry will hear from the developer who wants to convert the historic cinema into five flats and a gym, and objectors to the scheme who want the building to reopen as a cinema and community venue.

“We are still passionate about this fantastic local resource and the role it should play in our community,” say the campaign group Keep Cinema Local, established in 2001 as part of a campaign to keep open the Whiteladies Road cinema.

“It was a great cinema and it should be again. It’s terrible to see it closed and falling into disrepair while repeated, unsuitable planning applications try to undermine its character, appearance and function.”
