12 01 2013

Easton councillor Faruk Choudhury will become a Bristol Lord Mayor of firsts when he takes office in May. The 38-year-old Labour member will be the first Lord Mayor in Bristol to be a Muslim, the youngest person to hold the office and the first Asian to wear the ceremonial chains.

Faruk ChoudhuryChoudhury (right) hopes to use his year in office as Bristol’s first citizen to encourage people, especially ethnic minorities, to give blood and become organ donors.

He said: “Many people die every year as a result of donor deficiency. If I am Lord Mayor, then my wife, Shilpi and I will work across many organisations, encouraging blood donor sessions, especially among multi-ethnic communities as well as becoming an organ donor.”

The Lord Mayor is a ceremonial position with the real power remaining in the hands of elected mayor George Fergsuon, However, it is also their job of the Lord Mayor to chair meetings of the full council.
