Arenas in the UK

23 01 2013

As an architect by trade, Bristol mayor George Ferguson is in a unique position to ensure the best arena for the city. The proposed £80m arena will be built on empty land next to Temple Meads, and Ferguson is calling on his friends at the Royal Institute of British Architects to help run the design competition.

Bristol could have its long overdue arena by 2016, with the venue seating up to 12,000 people and expected to be a sustainable building.

If you’re thinking of entering the contest, here are some arenas across the UK from Exeter to Glasgow for inspiration:

Look at the state of the Hull arena, it’s disgusting! I reckon the Liverpool Echo one is the nicest.

Hull’s main stadium is in fact the KC Stadium, not the monstrosity pictured.

I quite like the Hull one. It’s sort of Pompidou Centre meets provincial industrial estate. You don’t see that often.

Arenas, like modern day Theatres and Cinemas (only much bigger!) seem to me inherently difficult to make attractive! The one thing the city is united on is the desire for an arena so let’s hope we get someone designing is who is inspired!
There seems a tendency for them to look like Multi Store car parks 😦

All pretty uninspiring apart from the Liverpool Echo Arena. Why not just resurrect the ‘exploding greenhouse’ that was to be built on the Harbourside? Surely the plans are bought and paid for? Just tinker with the insides a bit and you’ve got an eye-catching, jaw dropping, state of the art arena – I look forward to the cheque in the post Mr Ferguson.
