Brunel’s Buttery, one of Bristol’s best loved cafes, is no more. In its place comes the latest Costa Coffee. In recent months, Costa has opened outlets without permission on Whiteladies Road and the Gloucester Road. Sadly, because they are taking over from a current food outlet, their new opening on the harbourside is completely above board.
Despite Brunel’s Buttery being famous for their bacon butties, Costa will not be continuing the tradition. When I visited yesterday on their first day of trading, an employee told me that due to demand, they are thinking of introducing bacon paninis.
You’re a very bad man! My heart stopped. Literally
😦 I’m pretty sure this is sacrilege!
….or having just looked at my calendar, April Fools – D’oh
Sure it was yesterday you visited? Because, you know, it wasn’t April 1st then…;). Good one.
Hopefully customers who want their traditional bacon butties will simply voice their opinions and vote with their feet. It is a travesty that yet another local institution has fallen prey to a faceless conglomerarte.
I am shocked!
This really really had better be an April Fool
ANGRY FACE
I just started writing very vitriolic tweets about this before I remembered what the date was!
I was both shocked and dismayed to be stopped on Princes Street Bridge this morning and told that Spike Island has seceded from Bristol. There was some rather dramatic action going on between the Spike Island Navy (formerly the Harbourmaster’s fleet) and Bristol Ferries.
I really hope this is an April Fool post.. wouldn’t put it past a company like Costa though.
I am utterly appalled at this news. Of course they do not need planning permission because it is not change of use.
The vast majority of people using it will be tourists who will be totally unaware of its wonderful soft white bread bacon butties. Once again we Bristolians will be the poorer.
[…] off there was Bristol Culture with its ‘Costa Coffee takes over Brunel’s Buttery‘ story – just all too believable! I worked myself into a proper rage before I […]
An April Fools?
I was relieved to find this was an April fool!!
Thank Heaven for that, but it might give Costa an idea…….
Nearly spat out my cup of Typhoo in disgust!
I spent many a rainy day sat in the back of my Volvo with my young son eating a Bacon Buttie. They were fabulous. A sad day for Bristol. The staff were so friendly. I’m sure it’s high prices now and I’m sure trade will diminish.
Oh dear. Got caught four months later on this one. Phew. Travelling to Bristol this weekend and looking forward to a bacon buttie.
HO HO HO This joke first appeared about a year ago: it is just a smart Alec’s artwork on a PC.
Having nothing better to do today (Monday 20/08/20012) I drove my wheelchair down there to check. I can assure you that it is still the Buttery and I had a lovely bacon butty there.
Don’t be so gullible! Though I would not put it past Costa to try it on given all the tiresome publicity this joke has received.
I emigrated to Canada 3 years ago having lived in Bristol for 11 before I left. I’m planning my first trip ‘home’ and came across this post while researching my trip. Brunel’s Buttery holds a special place in my heart and is attached to so many memories, both bad and good…it was a real place of refuge on a Sunday morning.
Flights were very nearly cancelled…
